Giannis Antetokounmpo had to move on from Milwaukee — not out of any negative feelings towards the franchise that made him, but a desire to win.

The Bucks aren’t in the same place they were in the lead-up to that historic 2023 NBA Finals win. The roster has too many issues, and contending for a title looks like a faraway prospect.

That’s why Giannis has left for the Miami Heat. He feels the chance at a second ring is higher down in Florida.

But that doesn’t mean his Bucks story is written. The Greek Freak is still open to a Kevin Garnett-type return.

Giannis Antetokounmpo could rejoin Milwaukee Bucks before leaving NBA

The city of Milwaukee owes Giannis a debt. He brought them an NBA Championship in over half a century, and years of box-office entertainment from a two-time MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.

And the love they have for him is certainly reciprocated. Giannis has said as much on numerous occasions. This is the franchise that bet on him when he was just a young kid from Greece.

Wisconsin sportscaster Jim Paschke sat down with Giannis for an interview on the superstar’s own YouTube channel.

The conversation moved to his relationship with the Bucks, with Paschke telling him: “”I would say that you could always come home. You’ve earned that. You’ll always be welcome here.”

Giannis replied: “That would be awesome. If I can go and play, and then maybe come back. Kevin Garnett did the same thing. I saw this clip of him walking into the [Timberwolves] arena, and getting a standing ovation. People, to this day, still love him. Some people don’t always feel…”

Before he could finish that thought, Paschke cut across him, and for good reason. He assured Giannis that he will always be a hero in the city of Milwaukee, no matter where his career goes from here.

However it goes in Miami, and wherever he ends up after, Giannis always has the option of a homecoming. He was the centre-piece of the Bucks franchise for almost a decade, and one of their greatest-ever players.

That is not forgotten just because a player moves on.
