Hector Bellerin has reacted on Instagram after Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League by Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium.
A remarkable strike from Pedro Goncalves on the halfway line cancelled out Granit Xhaka’s opener, with the scoreline remaining 3-3 on aggregate throughout normal time and extra-time after the first leg’s 2-2 draw.
Unfortunately, Gabriel Martinelli was the only man to miss his penalty in the shootout, with Nuno Santos smashing home the winning spot kick right in front of the away fans.
Now, Bellerin has shared his thoughts.
What Bellerin said after Arsenal vs Sporting
Well, the Spain international made 239 appearances for Arsenal – scoring nine goals while also providing 29 assists – but he seemed pleased to see his new side knock the Gunners out of Europe on Thursday evening.
Bellerin – who has made six appearances for Sporting since moving to Lisbon in January – wrote “VAMOS MALTAAAA” on Instagram, which translates to “come on guys” after seeing the Portuguese giants progress into the Europa League Quarter-Final.
Unfortunately, the 27-year-old was unable to feature in either game against the Gunners, after suffering a knee injury in training.
Blessing in disguise for Arsenal
In our view, the Europa League exit shouldn’t upset Arsenal fans that much, as it allows Mikel Arteta’s side to remain fully focused – and rested – during the Premier League title race.
Despite holding a five-point lead over Manchester City, the Gunners still have some difficult tasks ahead.
Arteta must take on Liverpool at Anfield and Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, which are both massive games.
There are also tricky clashes to come against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium and Newcastle inside the cauldron of noise that is St James’ Park.
The title race is far from over, and while defeat to Sporting may hurt some now, it will surely prove to be a blessing in disguise for the north Londoners.
