Erling Haaland’s popularity went to another level during the 2026 World Cup.
The Premier League striker had an excellent tournament with Norway, scoring seven goals as his country reached the quarter-final before losing to England.
Haaland gained more followers on Instagram than any other soccer player during the World Cup, and his social media popularity has continued in the weeks after he left North America for his summer holiday.

Golden State Warriors want Erling Haaland to comment on social media post
The latest trend involving Haaland centres around him commenting on clubs’, fans’ and brands’ social media posts.
When taking part, the social media poster will write something along the lines of ‘is cool because’… ‘some guy named Erling will comment’.
Haaland has responded to a number of the posts already, but at the time of writing, he has not commented on the Golden State Warriors’ tweet.
The NBA outfit shared an old video of the Manchester City player gifting them a signed shirt.
They then captioned the clip: “The internet is cool because we can post an old jersey swap, and maybe some guy named Erling will comment ‘Go Dubs’.”
It is not known which NBA team, if any, Haaland supports, but he has already been compared to several basketball icons like Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon by Bill Simmons.
Speaking earlier this month, Simmons said: “He [Haaland] is the first striker I’ve ever seen that makes me feel like I’m watching a dominant big man in basketball. There’s pieces of all of these big guys that I’ve loved from over the years.
“Early ’90s Shawn Kemp on the headers, anything close to the rim, Shawn Kemp would get. It feels like anything in the box where he can have time to jump, get airborne and stick his head over somebody, he’s putting away.
“Young Shaq banging bodies around. There’s like 3-4 times a game he’ll just bowl over somebody. Footwork of Hakeem and then a little Michael Myers, because he has the Michael Myers reactions after the goals. Everyone else loses their mind after they score; he does the Michael Myers. I love it.”
