Leeds United lost 2-1 to Huddersfield Town this afternoon.

Leeds United manager Garry Monk has told BBC Radio Leeds that he didn’t feel his players deserved the 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town this afternoon – and slammed Terriers boss David Wagner.

The Whites made the short trip to the John Smith’s Stadium this afternoon to take on West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town, who also harbour ambitions of promotion to the Premier League.

It was Huddersfield who took the lead as Izzy Brown – an early substitute – converted from close range, before Chris Wood tapped home from Kyle Bartley’s knock-down to pull Leeds level.

The game appeared to be heading towards a draw, but Huddersfield grabbed a late winner with German defender Michael Hefele stabbing home to give the Terriers all three points in a pulsating derby.

The result drops Leeds down into fifth place in the Championship table, one point behind Huddersfield but still eight points inside the play-off places as a top six place still looks to be on the cards for Garry Monk’s men.

After some unsavoury scenes towards the end of the game, which saw managers Monk and David Wagner as well as both sets of players clash on the sidelines, the Leeds boss spoke to BBC Radio Leeds about the result.

Monk suggested that his players didn’t deserve the 2-1 defeat having performed so well and exhibited great commitment, but told his players that the defeat doesn’t change the club’s objectives or principles.

Monk did though slam Huddersfield boss Wagner for running down the touchline to celebrate the winning goal before bumping into the Leeds manager, suggesting that the German didn’t show any humility, respect or class.

“I felt for my players today,” said Monk. “They didn’t deserve that at all. That performance and that commitment, from everyone – including our fans – deserved much more. We haven’t got it, but I just said to the players at the end, that doesn’t change anything for us. We keep showing the same commitment, showing the same attitude, showing the same fighting spirit to put our football on the pitch, and that will serve us well going forward.”

“I’ve been brought up with the values of having humility, having some respect and having a bit of class. When I don’t see that, and that hasn’t come back towards us, then I don’t I’ll stand for that, ever. They’re the values I hold my team to, if somebody else has different values to that, or goes against those values, then I think that it’s wrong. They’re my values; humility, respect and class – and I don’t think that he didn’t show any of that instance when they scored the goal. He can answer his own actions, but that’s all I can speak about from myself,” he added.
