Timo Werner will be a ‘big loss’ for RB Leipzig after the former Chelsea striker secured a shock return to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window.

If that Spurs debut during the 2-2 draw with Manchester United is anything to go by, the issues which beset Timo Werner’s time at Stamford Bridge still remain.

After cutting inside and ballooning a wild effort high and wide, Werner then squandered an even better chance as he raced past Diogo Dalot only to pull his eventual short past the far post. As ever with Werner, you take the rough with the smooth, the sublime with the ridiculous.

Tottenham snap up Timo Werner

The Germany international marked his first outing in Tottenham Hotspur colours with an assist to set up Rodrigo Bentancur’s Old Trafford leveller, with Ange Postecoglou toasting a ‘really exciting’ display from his Leipzig loanee.

Werner may have struggled for starts before returning to England, but former Red Bull team-mate David Raum insists that the forward’s positivity and experience on and off the pitch will leave a bit of a void in Marco Rose’s roster.

“He hasn’t had an easy season. He also had his injuries last season, which of course also comes into play,” left-back Raum tells Sport1: “But he still helped us brutally again and again.”

“The whole team (got on well with Werner). He was there for everyone, looked after everyone and put everyone in a good mood. That’s why it’s a big loss for the dressing room.”

“(But if joining Tottenham) is what it took for him to get back to the Premier League, then I wish him the best.”

Spurs now turn to Antonio Nusa

Tottenham can sign Werner permanently for £15 million this summer should he impress between now and the end of May.

The London giants have also brought in Radu Dragusin – fighting off competition from Bayern Munich, Napoli, AC Milan and Newcastle – before turning their attention to Club Brugge’s £26 million-rated forward Antonio Nusa
