It’s fair to say that, as far as transfers of this ilk are concerned, there is no shortage of cautionary tales.

Take Jack Clarke, for instance.

A revelation in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United, Clarke joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £9 million deal after only one season of regular first-team football.

Three years and only four senior appearances in Spurs colours later, the former Elland Road whizzkid was heading back to the second tier with Sunderland.

Now, this is not to say Archie Gray’s own switch from Leeds to Tottenham is destined to go the same way. Gray is arguably a more rounded, mature footballer than Clarke was at around the same age. Furthermore, the London giants have a manager in Ange Postecoglou these days who prides himself in developing young talent.

Clarke, in contrast, found himself working under the master of short-termism in Jose Mourinho.

But Darren Bent, the former Spurs striker, still has a few concerns.

HITC understands that Brentford had agreed a £35 million deal with Leeds. But after the play-off runners-up rejected their proposed payment structure, Postecoglou’s side leapt in and hi-jacked the deal.

And while Bent has no concerns about Gray’s talent or potential, he does wonder if first-team opportunities will be as forthcoming at Spurs as they may have been at Brentford.

(Gray is) versatile. We’ve seen him play at full-back, we’ve seen him play in midfield,” the former England international who spent two years in North London from 2007 to 2009 tells talkSPORT (1 July, 12pm).

“He passes the ball, he gets on the ball, he’s comfortable in possession.

“But going into a dressing room like Tottenham, they are pushing for top four. It’s different expectations. If he goes to Brentford, he maybe can settle in for a year and then really kick on the next year. I know he’s ready to go now but – 18 years old – that’s still really young.

“Clearly going to Tottenham with Ange Postecoglou and the young players they’ve got in that squad, it is about potential. But if he’d gone to Brentford, I think he’d have gone straight in to play.”

Spurs beat Brentford to teenager’s signature

Gray, remarkably, was only one year old when Tottenham snapped up Bent from Charlton Athletic 17 years ago. The England Under 21 international certainly does not play like your typical teenager, however, swaggering around the pitch with a maturity and poise far beyond his years.

The fact that Leeds boss Daniel Farke has trusted Gray to shift from central midfield to a ball-playing right-back role also speaks volumes about his tactical intelligence. Gray started in 43 of Leeds’ second-tier fixtures in 2023/24.

Clarke, meanwhile, could be offered a shot at the Premier League himself.

HITC understands that Crystal Palace have identified the Sunderland talisman as a potential addition in the wide areas with Michael Olise set to join Bayern Munich. Clarke bounced back from a difficult spell in the capital to emerge as a leader in a youthful Black Cats side.

There is also interest at Selhurst Park in Leeds’ own Wilfried Gnonto. Club Brugge wonderkid Antonio Nusa is another option.
