Tottenham beat Newcastle on Sunday and perhaps the biggest takeaway from the game was Harry Kane’s performance.
The striker finally got his first goal and his first assist of the season against the Magpies and he got the praise he deserved for his showing.
Kane looked like a different player against Newcastle, but there was one Spurs man who looked reborn on Sunday.
Indeed, Tanguy Ndombele put in what was arguably his best performance in a Spurs shirt against Newcastle, and it’s come at an interesting time.
Just a fortnight ago the 24-year-old was being linked with a move away from the club and criticised for his fitness, but against Newcastle, he looked every bit a £62.8m midfielder.
Of course, people will inevitably point towards the goal – which was a ridiculously good finish, but his performance was about so much more than that.
Ndombele, who has so often been criticised for being lazy, covered so much ground at St James’ Park, David Ginola even stated that he was ‘everywhere’, and his stats show exactly how pivotal he was to this victory.
Ndombele had more shots than any other Spurs player, he made four tackles and he had 98 touches, the second-highest of any player in the match.
This was truly a complete midfield performance, and there were even some mesmeric moments that the stats don’t reflect.
So many times the Frenchman would get the ball in a tight area and somehow work his way out via fantastic footwork or incredible passing.
Ndombele has recently been described as a ‘frustrating’ player, but against Newcastle he looked like he was absolutely reborn and if he plays like this every week, Spurs will be a force to be reckoned with this term.
