Alan Shearer has praised Tanguy Ndombele for playing ‘really, really well’ for Tottenham during their 3-2 win at St James’ on Sunday, as he told Premier League Productions (17/10/21 at 7:00 pm)
The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer claimed that Ndombele is a ‘frustrating player’ to watch because he has ‘the talent’ in his boots, but lacks the consistency.
At the start of the campaign, Ndombele wasn’t even making Tottenham’s matchday squads and now he is putting the ball into the back of the net like he is opening the door for one of his teammates.
The 24-year-old does make it look effortless at times, but something just always seems to get in the way, mainly that lack of fitness and sharpness previously hurting him.
But he was perfectly fine yesterday and he let his motor roar on for the full 90 minutes in the carnival-like atmosphere in the North East.
Shearer praised Ndombele for the quality that he has, but he thinks that he can perform in such a manner ‘more often’
“He is a frustrating player, Ndombele,” said Shearer. “There is no doubt that he has the talent in there, which I think, from a Spurs point of view, he can do much often.
“He played really, really well today – they (Newcastle’s midfield) didn’t do anything to protect the back four, that’s why the midfield, particularly Ndombele, found it easy to play.”
From Tottenham’s perspective, they now want to see Ndombele producing these types of performances over several months.
If the Frenchman can do that, then he saves Spurs from a world of problems, including pushing the team higher up the pitch because of his ability to carry the ball forward and making those attacking runs without the ball inside the penalty area.
If Ndombele is making the ball talk higher up the pitch, then that means a certain Harry Kane isn’t dropping too deep as often.
And just like yesterday, he will then be putting the ball into the back of the net and showcasing to everyone why he is one of the top strikers in England’s top-flight.
