Everton’s move for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes could be back on despite the appointment of Rafael Benitez, according to Record.
The Toffees looked set to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo as their new boss in June following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure.
That move fell through, and seemingly so had a move for Nunes.
Record reported in June that Everton were on the verge of a deal for Sporting ace Nunes, with Nuno thought to be absolutely key to the move.
In the end, Everton went for Benitez. Record updated the situation, claiming that Benitez wasn’t quite as interested in Nunes as Nuno was, so a deal looked unlikely.
Now though, Record state that Benitez has looked into Nunes a little more and is now ready to bring him to Goodison Park after all.
The deal would cost up to €20million (£17million), with Nunes seen as a player who can bolster Benitez’s midfield options.
The 22-year-old notched three goals and two assists last season, starting 12 games and making 19 substitute appearances as Sporting won the Portuguese title.
Nunes has been branded ‘unbelievable’ and ‘too fast’ by ex-Estoril teammate Goncalo Santos, and it sounds like Benitez has been convinced by the Brazilian.
