Carlo Ancelotti has played down reports linking Everton with a move for Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, speaking to Corriere dello Sport.

The three-time Serie A champion isn’t the only talented shot-stopper linked with a move to Goodison Park in recent months.

If reports are to be believed, Alex Meret, Rui Silva and Manchester United misfit Sergio Romero are also targets.

Ancelotti, however, is no Jose Mourinho.

The affable Italian has defended Jordan Pickford in the face of fierce criticism since taking over the blue half of Merseyside and, when asked about the possibility of Szczesny returning to the Premier League, Ancelotti wasted little time throwing his weight behind England’s number one.

“Everton interested in Szczesny? I’ve got a keeper, it’s Pickford,” said the former Juventus boss.

Earlier this week, TuttoJuve reported Everton were willing to pay £10 million for Szczesny, a former Arsenal youngster who has stepped out of Gianluigi Buffon’s sizeable shadow in Turin.

The 31-year-old Pole has been quietly impressive in his four seasons at Juventus, although a couple of high-profile errors – notably against Porto in the Champions League and the derby with Torino – have cast doubt on his long-term future at the Allianz Stadium.

But while Borussia Dortmund won’t be his destination – the Germans can’t afford his £100,000-a-week wages – it appears Szczesny isn’t heading to Everton either.
