Everton target Alex Meret wants to leave Napoli this summer after losing his place to David Ospina at the Serie A giants, as reported by Il Romanista.

When the Italy international completed his £32 million move from Udinese to Napoli in the summer of 2018, he probably didn’t expect to spend most of his time at one of Italy’s biggest clubs warming the bench.

But, after a couple of unconvincing displays, veteran David Opsina has replaced Meret between the sticks, forcing one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time forced to watch on from the sidelines.

According to Il Romanista, the slender shot-stopper, who turned 24 on Monday, has no interest in staying for another year at the Stadio San Paolo if he is unable to reclaim the number one shirt.

Meret wants to join a club where he would be able to play week in, week out as he looks to get his career back on track after a two-year blip.

He has started just 12 league games this term, down from 21 in 2019/20.

This comes amid claims from Il Napoli, suggesting that Everton will offer Meret a fresh start at Goodison Park. Carlo Ancelotti was still plying his trade in Southern Italy when Meret arrived, describing the Udine-born ace as a ‘truly special goalkeeper’.

With Robin Olsen’s future uncertain and Jordan Pickford never too far away from a butterfingered blunder, perhaps Meret may feel that a reunion with Uncle Carlo is exactly the kind of shot in the arm his career needs.

It didn’t do James Rodriguez much harm…
