Mikel Arteta has made some big calls as Arsenal manager and not all of them have gone down well.
One of them included his decision to drop Aaron Ramsdale as his number-one goalkeeper and replace him with on-loan Brentford star, David Raya.
Well, on Tuesday night, his summer call was bearing fruit as the Spanish shot-stopper saved two penalties during Arsenal’s shootout win over Porto in the Champions League.
Jamie Carragher stated that ‘there isn’t any doubt’ that David Raya is now ‘a level above’ his teammate, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (12/03/24 at 11:05 pm).
In truth, it has been a week where all that talk about Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation is now going to stop.
Aaron Ramsdale makes a mistake that nearly costs his side all three points against Brentford and now the latest scenes at the Emirates Stadium.
It’s also probably further proof that the England international will leave, with Jamie Carragher touching upon the criticism that was first thrown at Mikel Arteta’s door when he signed David Raya.
David Raya’s penalty saves
“He is the hero isn’t he,” said Carragher.
“Fair play to the manager as well, there was a lot of criticism when he brought him in. There was a lot of talk about the two goalkeepers.
“But I don’t think there is any doubt that Raya is a level above Ramsdale. You see the hug from his manager. He has repaid him.”

Arsenal in the Champions League and the Premier League
You assume, if you asked the Arsenal fans to pick one trophy – the Premier League or the Champions League, then they would go for the English title.
A certain Bukayo Saka certainly wants the Premier League over the European Cup, with his team currently sitting top of the tree.
Arsenal won’t be in Premier League action this weekend because other teams are in the FA Cup.
So, after they were taken all the way by Porto, the players can rest and will now be preparing for international fixtures.
You suspect the majority of Arsenal’s squad will and have earned call-ups, it’s just a case of keeping your fingers crossed that nobody gets injured when they return at the end of the month.
