Ajax’s former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn is aware of that West Ham United ‘interest’ but believes a Premier League return is unlikely this year.

It is only 18 months since Tottenham accepted a club-record £25 million bid from Ajax, the Amsterdam giants bringing the former PSV Eindhoven back to the Netherlands. But the rumours have barely stopped for a second during Steven Bergwijn’s somewhat underwhelming stint at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

HITC Football understands that Bergwijn was offered to West Ham at the start of the January transfer window. But while The Hammers are admirers of the versatile attacker – and while the potential departures of Said Benrahma and Maxwel Cornet could open up space for another wide forward – Bergwijn is not expecting to be packing his bags and heading back to familiar surroundings in the final 24 hours of the window.

Former Tottenham man not expecting West Ham move

“I have a contract until 2027, so (staying at Ajax) makes sense,” Bergwijn tells Voetbal International

“But of course, in football, you never know what can happen. I’m only 26, so of course you keep all options open. One day I would like to play in the Premier League again. I think that remains the best competition.

“I also had a very nice time there, at Tottenham.

“Now I just play at Ajax. I now assume that this will also be the case after the summer. Of course, I have also read about interest from West Ham United.

“But, as far as I know, nothing is happening.”

Steven Bergwijn now the captain of Ajax

HITC was told that Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also among Bergwijn’s many admirers. It seems, however, that this was a case of the player before offered to West Ham rather than West Ham offering themselves to the player.

One player The Hammers do appear to be making a more concerted lunge at is Valentin Carboni, Monza’s Inter Milan loanee. An Italian agent claimed last week that David Moyes’ side had come forward with an £11 million bid for the teenager.

HITC also understands that West Ham like Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.
