Timo Werner could be set to return to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, and a second spell in London will see the former Chelsea frontman link up with a player he once described as ‘up there with the best in the world’.

HITC Football understands that Timo Werner, just a year-and-a-half after leaving Stamford Bridge for RB Leipzig to the tune of £25 million, is heading back to familiar surroundings.

Tottenham Hotspur have made an offer and are ready to sign the Germany international on loan, with an option-to-buy clause likely to be included in his contract. Werner has been heavily linked to Manchester United of late but his preference was always to join a club based in the capital.

And North London is now rapidly emerging as his most likely destination

Tottenham Hotspur make Timo Werner offer

Unfortunately for Werner, he is likely to replace Heung-Min Son rather than partner him under Ange Postecoglou. At least, initially.

Son could miss up to six club games due to the Asian Cup. And while Werner might not possess the South Korean’s emphatic finishing ability, his pace, movement and work-rate means the Leipzig benchwarmer ticks more boxes than most when it comes to finding a man capable of filling Son’s boots over the coming weeks.

“Son is up there with the best in the world,” Werner said of the Tottenham number seven ahead of Germany’s shock defeat to South Korea in the 2018 Russia World Cup.

“We have to keep an eye on him.”

Postecoglou knows the RB Leipzig forward well

Werner might have faced his fair share of criticism in recent seasons – profligate rather than prolific at Chelsea before finding game time hard to come by at Leipzig – but Postecoglou found out first hand back in October 2022 that giving a player of his talent opportunities in the final third is never a good idea.

Werner punished Celtic’s wastefulness as Leipzig struck late to beat his Celtic side in Glasgow during the Champions League group-stages.

Flash forward to early-2024, and Werner could soon find himself on leading the line for Postecoglou rather than against him, while sharing a dressing room with a forward he considers among the planet’s very best.
