Tottenham Hotspur have moved into pole position to sign striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig during the January transfer window, sources have confirmed to HITC Football.

Die Roten Bullen have made it clear to Werner that he can leave the Bundesliga club on loan this month. RB Leipzig are trying to move on from the former Chelsea man amid his difficult campaign so far this season. The 27-year-old has two goals in 14 outings in all competitions.

Several Premier League clubs have also been offered the chance to target Werner’s transfer with Crystal Palace, Fulham, Manchester United and West Ham each showing interest in his return to England. The German spent two years at Stamford Bridge between 2020 and 2022.

Tottenham have made RB Leipzig an offer for Timo Werner’s transfer

But sources have told HITC Football that Werner’s preferred option would be to switch back to London and Tottenham have also now made RB Leipzig their offer. Spurs are ready to take the 57-cap star on loan, which would include the option for the deal to become permanent.

RB Leipzig have the Stuttgart native under contract in Saxony until June 2026 after awarding Werner a four-year deal to land his return from Chelsea. Die Roten Bullen also spent £25.5m plus add-ons on his return in August 2022, two years after the Blues paid £45m for Werner.

Werner has faced an uncertain future at RB Leipzig during January after falling out of favour before their winter break. The forward did not feature in their final six Bundesliga games, in part owing to an injury. He had also only started in two of the attacker’s eight league games.

Tottenham now hope Werner can add another threat to Ange Postecoglou’s attack after the German scored 10 goals in 56 Premier League games for Chelsea. He also laid on 13 assists whilst playing at Stamford Bridge. Werner can also present a versatile threat in the frontline.
