Everton legend Leon Osman was impressed by Stefan Bajcetic’s latest ‘excellent’ Liverpool display after Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League giants triumphed 2-0 in Monday’s Merseyside derby, speaking on Sky Sports (13 February, 9.30pm).
Given the manner in which Sean Dyche’s ferocious midfield flattened Arsenal just eight days ago, there were understandable concerns about Bajcetic’s ability to last the pace as Everton made the short trip across Stanley Park.
But there is a very good reason why the one-time Celta Vigo starlet – at the age of just 18 – is quickly nailing down a regular berth at one of England’s biggest clubs. In his fourth start of 2023 alone, Bajcetic produced a performance belying his tender age; adapting impressively to a more box-to-box ‘number eight’ role with Fabinho providing support in behind.

Stefan Bajcetic stands out as Liverpool beat Everton in Merseyside derby
“The young man has done really well,” former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said of a player who was just four months old when Rafa Benitez was appointed at Anfield back in 2004.
“When it’s a Merseyside derby, especially when you’re coming up against that (Everton) midfield three, you actually think; ‘Will he be able to cope?’
“But he’s been excellent. He usually plays in that sitting role. Fabinho is in there tonight. He’s showing his full range of passing. Tigerish as well, winning second balls. It’s easy to see why Jurgen Klopp has so much confidence in him.”
Osman made 21 appearances in Merseyside derbies during his storied Everton career. And even through his blue-tinted glasses, he could appreciate a ‘coming of age’ performance from a teenager who feels more and more like a ray of light in a sometimes dark season for Liverpool.
“I think (the more advanced role) actually suited him. Stepping forward and using his energy,” Osman says. “Being able to not just sit in front of the back four but actually get about the pitch too.
“His passing range has been excellent.”
A Mo Salah tap-in following a rampant counter attack gave Liverpool a 36th minute lead on Monday night. Cody Gakpo then sealed three vital points with his first Premier League goal just after the break.
