Is Pedro Porro homegrown? Many have asked this on Google as Tottenham and Chelsea target a move for the Sporting Lisbon star.

Tottenham have earmarked the Spain international as their priority target with Antonio Conte looking for a new right wing-back, although they will have to meet the €45m (£40m) asking price to secure his signature.

That is according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano. Elsewhere, Mundo Deportivo in Spain believe Chelsea are also keen.

So, is Pedro Porro homegrown? And what else is there to know about the defender? Let’s take a look…

Is Pedro Porro homegrown?

Well, many have asked this particular question as Porro spent three years at Manchester City from 2019 to 2022.

Premier League rules state that no club in England’s top-flight can have more than 17 players who are not homegrown in their squad.

To qualify as a homegrown player, you must play for a FA-affiliated club for three years before turning 21.

You do not have to be born in England – for example, Paul Pogba and Hector Bellerin both qualify as homegrown, having grown up in Manchester United and Arsenal’s academies respectively.

As a result, Porro is NOT homegrown.

The 23-year-old did spent three years at Manchester City, although he never actually made an appearance.

Porro spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Real Valladolid, before spending two years on loan at Sporting Lisbon, who then signed him on a permanent basis in May 2022.

As per the Premier League’s official website, Tottenham currently have 14 non-homegrown players, so they are quite close to the 17-man limit if they plan to make additions from abroad this month.

In Chelsea’s case, they had 15 non-homegrown players in their Premier League squad before the January transfer window began, and have since added to them with the signings of Joao Felix, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos.

Therefore, Graham Potter will have to offload some of his foreign players if he is to sign Porro.
