According to Gianluigi Longari, Aston Villa have joined Newcastle and Everton in the race to sign Japhet Tanganga from Tottenham.

What’s the story?

Well, a number of Premier League sides are taking an interest in the England Under-21 international ahead of the September 1st deadline, with Nottingham Forest also keen to sign him.

Leeds have also expressed interest in Tanganga.

Now, Aston Villa have joined the race for his signature, after Antonio Conte made it clear that the 23-year-old was not in his first-team plans this season.

Tanganga is yet to play for Spurs this season, and his chances of action have become even thinner following the arrival of Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona.

Longari – a journalist for Sport Italia – believes Aston Villa have enquired about the Tottenham No.25 after Diego Carlos suffered a serious injury.

Steven Gerrard has also shortlisted Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek, while there is interest in taking Trevor Chalobah on loan from Chelsea.

Tanganga made 19 appearances in all competitions last season, missing a large chunk of the campaign with a knee injury.

Aston Villa, Newcastle & Everton could all miss out

Unfortunately for the Premier League sides interested in Tanganga, it seems as if AC Milan are in pole position.

Calciomercato believe the Italian giants have come to an agreement with Tottenham over a season-long loan deal, which includes a £20m option to buy for AC Milan.

Therefore, if Gerrard, Eddie Howe or Frank Lampard are to sign Tanganga, it looks like they’ll need to act quickly.

In truth, any hijack attempt will be difficult with AC Milan involved – the Serie A title winners can offer Tanganga Champions League football, as well as the chance to play at a historic venue in the San Siro.

Keep an eye on this situation, as many clubs continue to fight for the Tottenham defender.
