According to The Mirror, Anthony Gordon is now keen to leave Everton after Chelsea made a second bid for the youngster.
This is certainly an interesting turn of events.
Gordon, as a boyhood Evertonian, hadn’t kicked up much of a fuss this summer despite bids and interest from both Newcastle and Tottenham, but now that Chelsea are after him, he wants to go.
Whether or not this puts both Spurs on Newcastle back on alert remains to be seen, but reading between the lines, it would seem that a move to Stamford Bridge could be on the cards for the attacker.
Indeed, Gordon has reportedly told Lampard he wants to join Chelsea and he’s urging his manager to consider this offer.
Lampard, of course, knows the allure of playing for Chelsea having spent the majority of his career at Stamford Bridge.
Gordon was one of Everton’s star players in what was an incredibly uninspiring season last term, and the Merseyside club won’t be keen to lose Gordon after already selling Richarlison this summer.
Factor in that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still struggling with injury, and there’s even more reason to believe that Everton will be desperate to keep hold of Gordon.
However, when Chelsea come calling it’s hard to say now, and if Gordon has his mind set on a move away from Goodison, then Everton may just be delaying the inevitable.
A bid of over £40m has already been lodged, but Everton are supposedly holding out for closer to £50m.
With Chelsea more than happy to up their bids in their pursuit of Marc Cucurella earlier this month, there’s reason to believe that they will eventually meet Everton’s terms for Gordon, and this report will only encourage further offers from the Blues if they are needed.
This is a situation that could move quickly in the coming days.
