Callum Wilson has told the BBC Footballer’s Football podcast that he thinks Jesse Lingard would have been a good signing for Newcastle United this summer – but he has joined Nottingham Forest from Manchester United on a free.
Lingard, 29, was being linked with the majority of Premier League clubs following the end of his contract at Old Trafford. Newcastle were one of the strongest contenders. But he made the surprise switch to Nottingham Forest.
Indeed, Steve Cooper’s side have swooped to land the 32-time England international on a one-year deal. The Telegraph say he will be earning a basic wage of £80,000 a week – much less than widely reported elsewhere.

Numerous reports said Lingard had been the subject of interest from the Toon, but a move did not materialise. Asked about Lingard and whether he wanted him at Newcastle, the Toon’s no.9 believes he would have been a good signing.
“He would have been a great addition to our squad but I guess that’s probably for the hierarchy and Jesse’s people to have spoken and had them talks. I wish him all the best at Forest,” Wilson said.
Wilson: Lingard would have been a good Newcastle signing
The Toon have done business this summer but perhaps, not as much as fans would have liked. Nick Pope is a brilliant addition at £10million, Sven Botman is a real coup, and Matty Targett has completed a permanent deal.
But they perhaps are lacking a bit in the final third. Wilson is the club’s number one striker, Chris Wood as back-up. Eddie Howe is keen on another striker. But he could also do with a right winger, and a no.10.
Lingard would have covered two of those positions. Best in the 10, he also showed just how effective he is out wide as a winger while on loan at West Ham. But ultimately, they will have to look elsewhere.
Bids have been made for Leicester’s James Maddison, another England international. He would be a sensational signing, but a tricky one to pull off. One thing is for sure, Newcastle will be busy this month.
