Danny Mills has told TalkSPORT that if he was James Maddison, he would leave Leicester and join Newcastle this summer. The Toon have made a second, and improved bid, of £45million for the England international.

Maddison, 25, is about to enter his fifth season with Leicester but the Foxes are in financial decline. They are about to wave goodbye to Kasper Schmeichel, and are yet to make a signing. They need to sell players, before buying.

Wesley Fofana could be off to Chelsea. Maddison, then, might be tempted by a move to Newcastle. Reports this week state that Newcastle have made a second bid of £45million for Maddison – but Leicester want closer to £60million.

Tottenham are also interested in the ex-Norwich man, but Newcastle are certainly making headway. Asked about a potential move for Maddison to the Toon, Mills urged the playmaker to jump on the A1 and head north.

“It’s a step forwards. Look at where the two clubs are going. Newcastle is a club on an upward trajectory. Leicester are going downwards. They’re about to lose Kasper Schmeichel. They’re losing players left, right and centre.

“They haven’t bought anyone. They look like they’re heading down. It would be a great move for him. He is the sort of player Newcastle fans would love. If I was him, I’d jump on that A1 and start driving,” Mills said.

Maddison told to leave Leicester and join Newcastle

What a signing this would be for Newcastle. A real signal of intent. Maddison was in stunning form for the Foxes last season – having a hand in 30 goals. It is quite remarkable that he was not called up by Gareth Southgate.

Newcastle are well-stocked in midfield. They boast top talents such as Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey. But they do lack an original no.10, and Maddison would certainly plug that gap.

If Leicester want £60million and Newcastle are already bidding £45million, there is surely a compromise that can be met in the coming weeks. He has entered the final two years of his contract at the King Power.
