Peter Schmeichel told Jamie Carragher to ‘tone it down’ after he jibed at both Arsenal and Manchester United not being in the Champions League next season, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (28/05/22 at 11:55 pm).

Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League table, missing out on fourth spot on the last day of the season to Tottenham.

Whilst Manchester United, who are now managed by Erik ten Hag, endured their worst season during the Premier League era.

Nonetheless, many would have tuned in to watch Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final in Paris.

And Carragher, trying to get over the disappointment of his side losing, aimed shots at both Arsenal and Man United, which was met with a feisty response from his fellow pundit and ex-United keeper, Schmeichel.

Nonetheless, the conversation first started with Micah Richards not wanting to get carried away with Manchester City’s Champions League hopes next season.

“I am not getting involved in the chat (on Man City in Champions League next season),” said Richards. “Game by game.

“I’m not getting too excited. We have been there and lost. Semi-final and final the year before. I am going to be humble this time.”

Jamie Carragher then interrupted: “Well, it’s not going to be Manchester United or Arsenal is it?!”

Peter Schmeichel then responded to Carragher’s jibe: “You support a really, really good domestic team. So, just tone it down. You have been cocky all year.”

Carragher then added: “Is he (Schmeichel) going to do the Europa League or the Champions League next season (as a pundit for TV)?”

THURSDAY NIGHTS FOR ARSENAL AND MAN UNITED

Ten Hag may well be just be starting off this pressure-cooker of a job next season, but Man United will be expected to win the Europa League next season.

The same applies to Arsenal and Mikel Arteta, who haven’t finished in the Premier League’s top-four ever since Arsene Wenger left.

It’s just another sign of how the two clubs, who used to regularly battle it out at the top of the Premier League table, have declined since their iconic coaches retired.

And, as things stand, not much suggests they will close the gap at the top anytime soon.
