According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves want to sign Lille defender Sven Botman.
Botman is a fantastic talent, and with all due respect to Wolves, he was expected to sign for a much higher calibre club.
Indeed, the Dutchman has been linked to the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool in the past, and it’s not hard to understand why top sides have looked at him.
Botman was a star of Lille’s Ligue 1 winning campaign, appearing in 37 games for the French champions last term, and at the age of 21, he still has a lot of room to improve.
So, just how good is Botman? Well, according to journalist Duncan Castles, Jose Fonte believes he’s best centre-back he’s ever played with.
‘Fonte has played with an array of top-class centre-backs in his career including Virgil van Dijk, Toby Alderweireld, Pepe in the Portuguese national team and Gabriel last season who is now at Arsenal. From what I understand of Fonte’s impression of Botman, he thinks he’s the best of all of them,” Castles said.
‘He describes him as a machine and a man who doesn’t make mistakes.’
Of course, this may be a bit of hyperbole, but based on what we saw last season, Botman could grow to become a top-level centre-half, and if he ends up being even half as good as van Dijk, he’ll be a star.
Unfortunately for Wolves, Sevilla also want to sign the Dutchman, but if the Midlands club can win the race for his signature, it would be a real statement of intent.
