Sunderland will hold talks with Premier League outfit Everton this week as they look to bring Nathan Broadhead back to the Stadium of Light, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman tells the Northern Echo.

If Sunderland want to retain the services of their Welsh wonder, then the events of last seven days will have given their hopes a major leg-up.

Everton, having retained their top-flight status, are now in a far stronger position as they look to retain the services of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

Relegation, for the Toffees, might have pushed Broadhead into the first-team picture.

Sunderland, meanwhile, can now offer the 24-year-old striker a clean break at Championship level, having defeated Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.

“We will have a conversation with Everton this week, to see where they are at with it and where we are at with it, and see if that’s aligned,” says Speakman.

“We have to respect the fact that he is an Everton player. We’ve seen him as our player for the year, because we had to get the best out of him.

“But now that the season is finished he unfortunately goes back to being an Everton player.”

Will Everton sell Nathan Broadhead to Sunderland?

Broadhead scored an impressive 13 goals in 27 games on loan at the Black Cats in 2021/22.

His Everton contract expires next summer and, at the age of 24, it appears that the ship may have sailed as far as a future at Goodison Park is concerned.

“Look, he’s had some incredible moments and he’s been an inspiration in many respects in terms of some of the goals he’s scored,” Speakman adds.

“It has been harder for him of late because of injury. But you can’t take away from the fact that he’s got all the attributes to play at Championship level.”

Broadhead, who scored with a subtle chip against Arsenal in the EFL Cup and netted crucial winners in the run-in against Shrewsbury Town and Morecambe, averaged a goal every 124 minutes at League One level in 2021/22.
