Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham will activate the £40m permanent clause in Cristian Romero’s loan deal in the “coming days”. Romero has been excellent for Tottenham since joining Spurs last summer, on loan.
Romero, 24, endured a tricky first half to the campaign in which he suffered numerous injuries. The Argentina international was still recovering from some long-lasting knocks from his country’s Copa America win.
Having rid himself of those issues, Romero came to life after the turn of the year. He become a crucial part of Antonio Conte’s back three, as the Italian guided Spurs into fourth. Spurs will be in next season’s Champions League.
Romero remains on loan from Atalanta, but it is expected that he – and Dejan Kulusevski – will join for a combined £67.5million. Romano says the £40million Romero deal will be struck, with a contract until 2026 agreed.
Romano says Tottenham to activate £40m Romero clause very soon
Jamie Carragher recently said Romero reminded him of Ricardo Carvalho – and it is clear to see why. Aggressive, but with all the good parts of a modern, and old-fashioned defender. It is a no-brainer for Tottenham.
Romero is a symbol of the new Tottenham. Conte and Fabio Paratici have rid themselves of the Mauricio Pochettino and started afresh. Romero is central to that, giving Spurs a defensive basis for years and years to come.
While it was always a formality, to hear the news that Tottenham are set to complete the permanent signing of Romero will be music to the ears of Spurs fans. They are getting a real player, for £40million.
