Give Me Sport claim Tottenham could target Burnley defender James Tarkowski this summer, after previous interest in him. Tarkowski’s Burnley suffered relegation on Sunday, and he is out of contract in June.
Tarkowski, 29, was confident that Burnley would get the better of Leeds in the fight to stave off relegation. Indeed, the Clarets only had to match Leeds’ result and they would be safe – but they lost 2-1 to Newcastle United.
Leeds, meanwhile, produced a mammoth display to beat Brentford 2-1 in West London – thanks to goals from Raphinha and another Tottenham target, Jack Harrison. Burnley are down, and Tarkowski will surely go.
A recent report claimed West Ham had cooled their interest in the England international, as they believed Newcastle would sign him. But the latest report from GMS says Tottenham could revisit a move for Tarkowski.
Tottenham could target Tarkowski: Would be a sensible signing
Tottenham have managed this season with Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga as cover for Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies. But there is likely to be a shake-up in terms of defensive personnel.
Rodon might go, given his lack of game time. Tanganga has been linked with AC Milan, and Sanchez could also go in the coming weeks and months. Spurs want a left-sided centre-back to compete with Ben Davies.
What Spurs do lack, is a centre-back they can trust as Dier’s immediate replacement. Tarkowski could do that role and on a free, would add some much-needed warrior-like experience. A good signing, but not a crucial one.
