Writing on the Anfield Watch website, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Liverpool are unlikely to sign Renato Sanches this summer due to the midfielder’s salary demands.
Romano has maintained that Liverpool have an interest in Sanches for some time now, but it seems as though that ship may have sailed.
Indeed, the journalist says that Liverpool were very keen in 2021, but that transfer is now unlikely due to the Euro 2016 star’s salary demands and huge competition for his signature.
What’s the story?
Romano shared the scoop on Sanches and Liverpool.
“For Liverpool’s summer transfer plans, Klopp’s side are targeting a new midfielder in addition to Carvalho. Liverpool have been looking for a midfielder since Gini Wijnaldum left the club on a free transfer last summer,” Romano wrote
“Renato Sanches was one of the names on the shortlist back in 2021, but a move remains unlikely, with the Portuguese’s salary demands especially ambitious and the competition for his signature high.”

Another Ligue 1 midfielder?
Sanches may not be headed to Anfield this summer, but another Ligue 1 star could be.
Indeed, Aurelian Tchouameni is being linked heavily with the Merseyside club at the moment, and with Romano claiming that the Reds want a new midfielder at the end of the season, that could well be one to keep an eye on.
As for Sanches, we can’t help but feel like Liverpool are making the right decision here.
The Portugal international has already failed once in the Premier League with Swansea City, and while he’s been starring in France, he really didn’t look suited to the English game.
The midfielder may have been described as ‘wonderful’ in the past, but he may not be the long-term solution to Liverpool’s midfield puzzle.
