Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur may be interested in a certain Tomas Soucek of West Ham United.

The West Ham midfielder has been a revelation in the Premier League since joining the East Londoners in 2020.

Tottenham need a goalscoring midfielder in their ranks and the Czech international has netted 18 times in the Premier League, across 83 appearances.

There’s no doubt that the towering 27-year-old – who stands at 6’4 – knows where the goal is.

And Gold, who exclusively covers Spurs for Football London, has said he’s heard suggestions that Antonio Conte might be an admirer.

He said: “As for Tomas Soucek, there are suggestions that Conte is a fan but unless there’s an unexpected departure this summer then Spurs seem pretty well stocked for defensive central midfielders with Bentancur, Hojbjerg and Skipp.”

Goalscoring burden

What Gold has overlooked is the fact that Soucek isn’t a traditional defensive midfielder, despite what his height suggests.

His goal return for West Ham is testament to his attacking prowess and, as mentioned, the Lilywhites really do need to open up alternative sources for goals, rather than rely on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

When those two struggle, so do Tottenham and that’s been proven in recent games.

Besides, a transfer for Soucek is plausible.

It has been reported that Tottenham are indeed in the market for midfielders this summer, with Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele unlikely to have a long-term future in North London.

And with Dele Alli also gone, another attacking midfielder, well clearly that’s an area where Spurs will strengthen between now and next season.

Whether West Ham will sell to a rival like Tottenham, however, remains to be seen very much.
