Lille striker Jonathan David is a long-term target of Arsenal, according to the Athletic.

Long-term admirers

They claim that Arsenal have been watching David for three years now, with Mikel Arteta’s side now in the market for a new number nine.

Arsenal apparently first kept tabs on David after he moved to Gent way back in 2018, so they know about the Canadian’s talents well by now.

Whether they will take the plunge and make a bid remains to be seen.

But the latest update does suggest that he could become an option for the Gunners, due to their long-standing interest.

If they were to land the skilful forward, they could hardly pick a more in-form front man.

David already has 10 goals in 15 Ligue 1 games this season, which puts him at the top of the scoring charts for the division.

David is also at the perfect age for Arteta and Edu’s recruitment plan.

Arsenal appear to be targeting young players, who they feel that they can develop on the training ground.

David, at the age of 21, certainly still has plenty of time on his side.

But he already appears ready to make the step up – given his form in France this season.

David is talented dribbler, he also possesses great pace and an ice cool finish.

Indeed, only last season Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck described the youngster as a ‘phenomenon’ prior to his transfer to Lille (Het Nieuwsblad).

His form in France has since gone on to prove just what a talent he is.

And if Arsenal don’t make a move for David, it seems highly likely that another top side from across Europe will, given his sparking form.
