Andre Onana will leave Ajax amid interest from Premier League trio Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, manager Erik ten Hag has told ESPN.
While Ten Hag has committed his future to the reigning Eredivisie champions in recent months, turning down the Spurs job and distancing himself from a potential move to St James’ Park, Onana has different plans.
The former Barcelona goalkeeper is due to become a free agent in summer 2022.
And, speaking just three days after Onana was linked with a move to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle and Antonio Conte’s Tottenham, Ten Hag has confirmed what everyone at Ajax already knew – the Cameroon international will leave the Johan Cruyff Arena on a free transfer in eight months’ time (90Min).
Can Arsenal, Tottenham or Newcastle tempt Andre Onana to the Premier League?
“Of course we aren’t happy he doesn’t want to extend his contract but he is under contract with Ajax (until June) and still has the motivation to deliver 100 per cent,” explained Ten Hag.
“We have to take advantage of that.
“It’s not up to me, it’s up to (sporting director) Marc (Overmars to extend his deal).
“I don’t think (we’ll try again), those decisions have been made. I have to work with this squad and get results right now. Will he will leave? I think so. Not now, but in the summer.”
It’s understood Conte, who succeeded Nuno Espirito Santo as Spurs head coach this month, has been tracking Onana since his Inter Milan days.
As it stands, however, Conte’s former employers look well placed to fight off competition from his current ones, with Onana striking a verbal agreement regarding a four-year deal worth £50,000 a week at the San Siro.
Tottenham are unlikely to accept defeat just yet, however, and the same can be said of an Arsenal side that has been tracking Onana for the best part of two years.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal are making another attempt to lure Onana to north London ahead of the January transfer window.
