Ajax director Marc Overmars admits Andre Onana won’t sign a new contract at Ajax as Arsenal reportedly look to bring the Eredivisie champion to the Premier League, speaking to the Algemeen Dagblad.

It’s funny how things change.

A month ago Arsenal were bottom of the Premier League, goalless, pointless and, in all honestly, feckless.

Now they sit in the top half looking up after four wins in a row in all competitions culminating in a thumping 3-1 victory over north London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks back to his goal-poaching best, Martin Odegaard is producing his finest football as an Arsenal player, and the Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes union appears to possess that perfect blend of grit and guile that characterises the best centre-back partnerships.

Will Ajax ace Andre Onana finally join Arsenal in 2022?

Even Aaron Ramsdale is silencing his doubters, the £24 million shot-stopper letting his football – and those cat-like reflexes – do the talking.

However, Ramsdale’s sudden emergence as Mikel Arteta’s go-to number one appears to have cast serious doubt on Bernd Leno’s future.

The Germany international will be a free agent next summer and, amid interest from Inter Milan, Juventus and a number of Bundesliga clubs, it’s believed a January departure may be on the cards.

And the good news for Arsenal is replacing Leno with a keeper of equal quality shouldn’t be all that difficult given Onana, too, will be available for nothing nine months from now.

“We aren’t working with (Onana) at the moment and aren’t having any conversations,” explains former Arsenal winger Overmars.

“We tried (to extend his contract) but it didn’t work. Then you move on. It wasn’t up to us.”

Arsenal have been admiring former Barcelona youngster Onana for the best part of two years and came close to striking an agreement in the summer.

The question is, would the Cameroon international be willing to join a club where he wouldn’t be the guaranteed number one?
