Barcelona defender Emerson Royal skipped training this morning as he closes in on a big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

Thank goodness for Premier League riches, eh Barcelona?

By the time the window closes tonight, the cash-strapped La Liga giants will have seen their threadbare coffers boosted to the tune of £26 million.

That’s how much table-topping Spurs are expected to pay for Emerson, the Brazil international right-back who, according to The Guardian, is closing in on a deal that would see him join Cristian Romero, Bryan Gil and Pape Matar Sarr in north London.

It’s no secret Nuno Espirito Santo wants a right-back added to his squad.

Serge Aurier is out of favour, while Matt Doherty was sold by Nuno this time last year when the Portuguese tactician was in charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Japhet Tanganga may be a fine defender but the second coming of Kyle Walker he most certainly is not. There’s a feeling at Tottenham that Tanganga’s future lies at centre-half rather than out on the flank.

Could Emerson solve Tottenham’s right-back problem?

And, according to reports coming out of Spain, Emerson was nowhere to be seen as Barca boss Ronald Koeman took training this morning.

The former Real Betis loanee is expected to sign a five-year deal with Tottenham.

Interestingly, Emerson was heavily linked with arch rivals Arsenal earlier in the transfer window.

But Takehiro Tomiyasu – the Japan international who agreed a move to Spurs a few weeks ago – may now on his way to the Gunners instead as Hector Bellerin closes in on a dream move to boyhood club Real Betis.

You win some, you lose some.
