Lautaro Martinez is pushing Inter Milan to pay him a signing on bonus in any new contract, per L’Interista, amid claims Tottenham Hotspur are ready to break their transfer record.
Martinez is locked in productive negotiations with the San Siro hierarchy over new terms as they work on an extension. Dialogue between the Argentine striker and Serie A holders are yet to create any serious problems, but the signing bonus.
The Copa America champion believes he deserved a new contract before the start of last season. Martinez now wants Inter Milan to effectively reimburse him for some of the cash lost by remaining on the same terms while scoring 17 goals as they won the 2020/21 title.
Inter have offered Martinez a €6m-a-year (£99k-p/w) contract, per Sky Italia, and Fabrizio Romano believes an agreement is close. The transfer expert adds they only need to agree a few final details – potentially the signing on bonus, then.
Tottenham will be paying close attention to the productive tone of Martinez’s negotiations with Inter over the sensation’s new contract. Gazzetta dello Sport report Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy is ready to smash the club’s transfer record to sign the forward.
The north London chief is ready to increase the club’s unsuccessful €70m (£60m) bid to €90m (£77m). Martinez would have already been Tottenham’s record signing if Inter accepted their previous bid, eclipsing the £54m paid for Tanguy Ndombele in 2019.
Tottenham window to sign Martinez from Inter closing rapidly
Another aspect for Tottenham to monitor is Gazzetta add Martinez’s agent, Alejandro Camano, asked Inter for a €7m-a-year (£115k-p/w) contract. The Argentine wants to be the Nerazzurri’s best-paid player as he does not benefit from the Growth Decree in Italy.
But Spurs’ window to strike a deal with the San Siro leadership is closing much quicker than the summer market. Levy will likely be concerned at the constructive nature of the striker’s talks over a new deal, despite Tottenham’s interest.
If Inter now offer Martinez the signing on bonus he requests, Tottenham’s pursuit could well be over. It is likely the only major issue they need to solve. Leaving Fabio Paratici to go all-out for Dusan Vlahovic, with Alasdair Gold noting Fiorentina’s ace is the one they want.
