The 29-year-old midfielder has explained his decision to move to the Black Cats, outlining the importance of Moyes.

Moyes, who is in charge of Sunderland at the moment, worked with the Republic of Ireland international at Everton.

“The manager here took me to Everton from Manchester United and in my opinion I played some of my best football under him for the first two years I was there,” Gibson told The Northern Echo. “Hopefully I can do the same thing here.”

“I heard the rumours this time but I’d not had any contact with anyone,” added the midfielder. “Sunday evening my agent rang to say it could be on, so I jumped in my car and here I am after it got done on Monday morning.

Ross McCormack comments on his future

“Having worked under David Moyes before that was a big influence. I needed out of there (Everton). There were a few options but nothing I fancied as much as this, it will be a challenge but I am looking forward to it.”

Gibson failed to make a single league appearance for Everton this season before his move to Sunderland in the January transfer window.

The former Manchester United midfielder played only seven times in the Premier League during the 2015-16 campaign.

Sunderland are struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment and are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship.

The Black Cats are at the foot of the standings with 16 points from 23 games, five points behind 17th-placed Swansea City.

Meanwhile, Everton currently find themselves seventh in the standings with 37 points from 23 games, nine points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
