Newcastle United were reportedly interested in signing Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace in the January transfer window.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has told The Times that he does not know why Andros Townsend did not join the club in the January transfer window.
According to The Times, Benitez want to sign Townsend from Premier League club Crystal Palace last month.

The England international winger left Newcastle for the Eagles in the summer of 2016 following the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

Benitez has admitted that he does not know why Townsend remained at Palace.
”I do not know,” the former Liverpool and Chelsea manager told The Times when asked why Townsend remained at Palace.

Townsend is a good player and would have been a decent signing for Newcastle, but there is nothing Benitez can do now that the January transfer window is over.

Interestingly, the Championship club failed to sign a single player in the January transfer window.
The Magpies are second in the league table at the moment with 59 points from 28 matches, just a point behind leaders Brighton & Hove Albion.
Benitez’s side are still in contention of a top-two finish in the Championship this season, but they have to start putting together a run of positive results.
