Saints boss Claude Puel had priorotised the signing of a new centre-back this month, having sold Jose Fonte to West Ham United and lost Virgil van Dijk to injury.

And Tasci, who spent the end of last season on loan to Bayern Munich from current employers Spartak Moscow, appears to be the man tasked with filling that void – despite reported interest from rival Premier League clubs.

The former Germany international should not be the only new face at St. Mary’s, however, with young Nice goalkeeper Hassen also set to arrive, having worked with Puel at the Cote d’Azur club.

And according to the Daily Mail, Southampton remain in talks with Napoli regarding the signing of striker Manolo Gabbiadini, for whom the Saints are said to have offered £13.5 million plus another £3.5 million in add-ons and a ten per cent sell-on fee.
