What are the main talking points amongst Aston Villa supporters shortly before the January transfer window deadline?

With the transfer window swiftly approaching its deadline, here is a look at what some of the Aston Villa supporters who have taken to fans forum VillaTalk are discussing on Monday morning…

Ross McCormack

Ross McCormack looks like he could be on his way out of Aston Villa this month after falling out with manager Steve Bruce. The Daily Mail reports that the Villans are even willing to pay half of his £45,000 a week wages to encourage loan bids. While few supporters seem keen on seeing the struggling Scotsman remain at Villa Park beyond this month – he has scored just three times this term – many who have taken to VillaTalk have expressed their concern about the idea of letting him temporarily join a Championship rival and would rather see all ties severed.

Despite a disappointing first half of the season, Steve Bruce’s men went into the window with an outside chance of reaching the play-offs so it is fair to say that January has been crucial. And it appears that the business they have done so far will give them an excellent chance of pushing towards the top six. The fans seem to be reflecting extremely positively upon the acquisitions of Henri Lansbury, James Bree, Birkir Bjarnason and Conor Hourihane as well as the temporary departure of Pierluigi Gollini.

Jordan Rhodes

With McCormack’s future up in the air and Rudy Gestede already gone, strengthening their options up front could be a priority. Interestingly, those taking to VillaTalk appear to be unconvinced about whether Jordan Rhodes – who is on their radar (via Birmingham Mail) – is the answer as opinion is divided. Some, perhaps reflecting on his record in the Championship, think he could be a game-changer, while others are wondering whether his poor time at Middlesbrough should act as a warning.

Aaron Tshibola

While Villa fans do not want McCormack loaned out, the general consensus is that Aaron Tshibola’s loan switch to Nottingham Forest is a good move for the player and the club. The youngster struggled for opportunities at Villa Park, so a switch to the City Ground – who are well below the Villans in the table so will not be in direct competition – may be perfect for his development.

Ashley Westwood

Few players in the current Aston Villa squad seem to ignite as much debate as Ashley Westwood. The 26-year-old has never really kicked on since arriving in 2012, and is enduring a particularly disappointing season with no goals and no assists coming this term. Though some Villa fans feel some of the criticism is becoming unfair, others have used strong words such as diabolical to describe his form and suggested that he’s nowhere near good enough (via VillaTalk). Bruce selling him during the final hours of the window may perhaps be a popular decision.
