Liverpool have been quiet in the transfer window this summer but Arne Slot and co did make a push for one ‘extraordinary’ signing.

Premier League clubs are striking deals left, right and centre this summer.

Arsenal have just confirmed the signing of Riccardo Calafiori to bolster their Premier League title push.

Manchester United have struck two exciting deals with Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro signing on the dotted line.

Yet over at Liverpool, this has been a quiet summer.

July is set to come to an end with no new arrivals at Anfield and fans are left wondering whether new boss Arne Slot will have a new signing by the start of the season.

Liverpool missed out on ‘extraordinary’ signing

Incoming Liverpool speculation is thin on the ground at the moment but one target has proven difficult to sign.

HITC reported in March that Liverpool were determined to keep winger Luis Diaz despite suggestions of a departure.

Liverpool have though been looking at left wingers with Anthony Gordon emerging as a target.

HITC understands that Liverpool were interested in signing Gordon earlier this summer.

Gordon came through with Everton but is a boyhood Liverpool fan and actually started in the Reds ranks.

The 23-year-old hit 11 goals and 10 assists last season, forcing his way into the England squad at Euro 2024 in the process.

Liverpool fancied bringing Gordon back to Merseyside and that has now been confirmed by Amanda Staveley.

Previously co-owner at Newcastle, Staveley has decided to step down this summer.

Now speaking for the first time since her exit, Staveley has told The Athletic that she feared losing Gordon.

Staveley has admitted that Liverpool ‘chased’ Gordon this summer and there were real concerns that he and Alexander Isak – both ‘extraordinary’ players in Staveley’s eyes – would move on.

Newcastle managed to stand firm though, keeping Gordon despite their well-publicised PSR issues.

“My biggest concern was that we’d lose Alex (Isak) or Anthony (Gordon) because Liverpool chased him and both are extraordinary players,” said Staveley. “Negotiating is tough because you have to pretend it means nothing to you when it means everything,” he added.

Liverpool may be back for Anthony Gordon

Newcastle have managed to fend off Liverpool for now but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Reds come back.

It may not be this summer but Liverpool will still have Gordon on their radar – especially with the knowledge of him being a boyhood fan.

That could seriously help Liverpool convince Gordon into agitating for a move to Anfield down the line.

A speedy and direct winger, Gordon would fit the bill for Slot after the success of Luis Sinisterra and Igor Paixao under him at Feyenoord.

Gordon’s contract is thought to expire in 2026, so Liverpool will surely be sniffing around the winger for a while yet in the hope of finally striking a deal.
