England’s World Cup quarter-final win over Norway was not without controversy.
Indeed, the Norway players were deeply unhappy that Jude Bellingham’s first goal in Miami was allowed to stand, with the ball appearing to hit a camera above the pitch before the Real Madrid star scored.
After watching that Jude Bellingham display, is he now in contention to be player of the tournament? If not, who is ahead of him? 🤩
A generational talent 🌟
They were also unhappy that Torbjorn Heggem saw a goal ruled out because of an Erling Haaland push on Elliot Anderson.
England, however, were not without their own complaints after an initial decision to award
Djed Spence a penalty in extra-time was overturned by VAR. Watching on, Dave Portnoy could not believe it was awarded in the first place.
Portnoy can’t believe England initially got a penalty against Norway
Spence tumbled in the box under the challenge of Oscar Bobb. Referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot, only to see the decision overturned by VAR.
England defender Spence was deemed to have initiated the contact, hence why the on-field decision was overturned.
While it did not matter in the end for England because they held on to a 2-1 victory in Miami to book their spot in the World Cup semi-final, Barstool Sports owner and founder Portnoy did not believe it was the correct call in the first place.
He took to social media platform X to write: “No way that should be a penalty.”
England head Thomas Tuchel admitted himself that his team got “lucky” in their victory, although they can perhaps point to a harsh decision going against them in this particular incident.

Spence has certainly grown into an England player during the tournament. Much was made about the decision to select him in the first place but the Tottenham defender has certainly proven to be a valuable member of the squad.
Momentum is with this England team. They might not always convince but they are getting the job done and that’s what matters.
