Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has declared what Arne Slot’s side needs to win the Premier League this season.
Liverpool have been frustrated in the transfer market this summer with the Reds yet to make a senior first-team addition to their squad under new manager Arne Slot.
The Reds want a new centre-back this summer and Liverpool were ‘working hard’ for Leny Yoro but the French teenager joined Manchester United last month.
It was their pursuit of a midfielder that has gone awry with HITC reporting that, despite receiving encouragement previously, Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi snubbed Liverpool and now looks set to sign a new deal.
With the season kicking off this weekend, Liverpool are yet to add to their squad.
Danny Murphy details what Liverpool need to win the title
A new midfielder and centre-back were understood to be Liverpool’s priorities this summer with Slot also keen on seeing how Stefan Bajcetic has recovered from his injury issues.
Speaking on talkSPORT, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has stressed that the Reds need two additions if they are to win the title.
“Well, the window’s not closed,” he said. “And the reality is Liverpool’s transfer business over the last five-six years has been excellent. I expect them to be top four, but I don’t think they’ll overcome City.
“They can’t win it with this squad can they? I don’t think so. They’ll be better, of course they would. Significant new signings – yeah, I think a centre-half and a holding midfielder.
“When you look at the two best teams in the country last year with Rodri and [Declan] Rice, Liverpool don’t have that.”
Liverpool’s need for midfield reinforcement
Whilst missing out on Zubimendi will be a big blow, Liverpool can’t have any complaints over the Spaniard’s loyalty after Steven Gerrard did the same thing back in 2005.
As for Slot’s side this summer, the Reds do need a midfield reinforcement but if they don’t bring one they do have more than enough quality.
The midfield three showed last season that they can be relied upon and with Slot playing a more possession-heavy style of play, they could excel.
Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni has made quite the impact too and the 17-year-old could be ready for his breakthrough campaign at Anfield.
Things are certainly not all doom and gloom for Slot’s side with just over two weeks until the window slams shut.
