Liverpool fans and Arne Slot might not have to wait too long now to bring in their first new signing after a whole summer of patience.

Jurgen Klopp’s first signing when he entered the Liverpool dugout was Marko Grujic, as the German didn’t have to wait too long to bring in who he wanted in 2016.

Many years later, with Klopp writing his name in Liverpool folklore and making the job of the next man even tougher because of his success, Slot is still waiting to announce his first major capture and some fans have become annoyed.

Ask the Anfield faithful and they will tell you that a number six is probably needed most because they haven’t well and truly replaced Fabinho since his transfer to Saudi Arabia last summer.

It has been well-documented that Martin Zubimendi has turned down Liverpool, with supporters also keen for their club to enhance the defensive backline.

Slot’s brutal call towards Jarell Quansah was a topic of discussion after the opening weekend of Premier League football, with Liverpool beating Ipswich at Portman Road.

But even then, that isn’t going to be the first area the team will add to and then proceed to bring in Slot’s first signing as manager.

Danny Murphy thinks his former side are ‘planning ahead’ as some are left surprised by their transfer call.

Sources have told HITC that Liverpool have agreed a £35 million deal with Valencia to sign goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Murphy labelled the 23-year-old as ‘incredible’ for his performances at Euro 2024 and how this is a ‘great bit of business’ from those on Merseyside, as he told talkSPORT.

Liverpool to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili

“They are planning ahead, aren’t they,” said Murphy. “I don’t know what’s going on with Alisson or what conversations he has had with the club.

“But it seems like they are being pro-active and finding his replacement. I was fortunate to see Mamardashvili twice, and to be honest with you, I didn’t know much about him. He was in incredible form in the Euros. Big presence. Normal stuff. The shot stopping and all that. Decent with his feet. When I say presence, he is about 6ft 4in.

“I think that’s a great bit of business getting him in now. I don’t know about the Alisson and that situation. It would be a surprise to bring in a keeper now, for what three years time. Maybe there has been something from Alisson. But he is a super keeper.”

Alisson Becker’s Liverpool future

You question what this means for Alisson Becker in the long run and if he will be at the club beyond next season.

Sources have explained Alisson’s stance amid the Mamardashvili talks, with the Brazil star one of his side’s most important players and probably the first name on the team sheet.

You just sense that Liverpool are at a crossroads here and the old guard could be heading for the exit door pretty soon.

Goal machine Mohamed Salah, Real Madrid-linked Trent Alexander-Arnold and captain Virgil van Dijk are all out of contract next summer and you feel that the Liverpool era under Klopp, in terms of the players who won him success, could be gone and out pretty quickly.
