Aston Villa were linked with the Wigan Athletic player throughout the summer transfer window.
Nick Powell ended the summer transfer window a Wigan Athletic player, despite on-off links with Aston Villa.
The Sun reported last month that Aston Villa had made contact about signing Powell, who played under their manager, Steve Bruce, at Hull.
But the newspaper later claimed the 24-year-old would stay with Wigan, where his contract expires at the end of this season.
Powell went on to score in the Latics’ opening day win against Sheffield Wednesday, but that didn’t stop Paul Cook adding a new face in his position on Thursday.
And it is possible that £2 million move for Josh Windass will open Wigan up to the prospect of losing Powell, whether they actively seek to move him on or not.
Given his contract status, allowing Powell to leave could be in the Lancashire side’s best interests, especially if another club is willing to pay the £5 million fee speculated (and EFL clubs can still sign players on permanent contracts this month, albeit ones that commence in January after an initial loan period).
And after Aston Villa failed to add in the former Manchester United player’s position (although they did manage to keep hold of Jack Grealish), it would be little surprise to see the Villans come calling between now and August 31st.
