Aston Villa had been linked with a move for the Wigan Athletic player.

Steve Bruce has been told Nick Powell will stay at Wigan Athletic, despite interest from Aston Villa – according to the Sun (July 31, live blog).

The newspaper reported on Monday that Villa had made contact with Wigan about signing Powell, who played under Villans’ boss Bruce at Hull City.

And despite its claim the 24-year-old had hinted he wanted to leave the DW Stadium, the Sun now states he will stand by Latics boss Paul Cook – the man who revived his career last season.

That could come with a downside, however, with Powell’s contract up at the end of this season.

If true, Powell – who would have cost around £5 million, according to the Sun – would be the second attacking midfielder Aston Villa are reported to have missed out on, with Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn heading to Sheffield United on loan.

Who should Aston Villa turn to if they can’t get Powell or Woodburn?
