Football website 90Min claim that AC Milan are planning to make Rafael Leao the highest-paid player in Serie A football amid interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham ahead of the January transfer window.

Leao, 23, has become one of Italian football’s best players in the last couple of years. Last season, he had a hand in 26 goals as Milan went on to win the Serie A title. This season, his form has improved even further in his 13 outings.

Already, the Portugal international has four goals and eight assists in just 13 games. So, it is clear to see why Milan want to keep him – but the Premier League’s biggest clubs are interested. Manchester City are not giving up.

That is according to CMW, who say a fee of £86million is required. Football director Fabio Cordella says Tottenham are keen, while a report from CalcioMercato says Chelsea could offer Christian Pulisic and cash to sign Leao.

But the latest report from 90Min says Milan are desperate to fend off interest in their star man. So much so, they are ready to make him the highest-paid player in Serie A football – eclipsing the likes of Paul Pogba and Dusan Vlahovic.

What a signing Leao would be for any Premier League club. He is producing the kind of form that makes him one of the best left-wingers in the world. At just 23, that is some feat. Leao is easily on a par with the likes of Son Heung-min.

So, can Premier League clubs tempt him with a move? Without a doubt. His current deal expires in the summer of 2024 and it looks, as things stand, that a move could materialise at the end of the season. But Milan have time on their side.

They have until then to get a deal done before next summer’s window. Of course, it all depends on where Leao sees his future. He is shining for Milan. A move to any of the clubs may reduce his game time. But he is definitely good enough.
