Hull City have been labelled the Championship’s ‘the transfer window winners’ after signing Fabio Carvalho and Anass Zaroury from Premier League duo Liverpool and Burnley.
After landing two uber-talented forwards who have been key cogs in previous promotion-winning machines – Zaroury at Burnley and Fabio Carvalho at Fulham – Liam Rosenior’s side is starting to resemble something of an ‘All Star’ collection of second-tier talent.
The ‘Hull-em Globetrotters’, as was suggested by the always-insightful Not the Top 20 Podcast.
Carvalho, for instance, was so impressive during his time at Fulham that Liverpool jumped at the chance to bring the ephereal playmaker to Anfield for a compensation fee of £5 million back in 2022, the youngster scoring a dramatic late winner against Newcastle United soon after.

Liverpool loan Fabio Carvalho to Hull City
Now back in the Championship, alongside Zaroury and another EFL-specialist in the left-footed assist-machine Ryan Giles, Hull’s frontline now looks a match for anyone in the division. Especially with Jaden Philogene, superb since his arrival from Aston Villa, also returning from injury at the ideal time.
Hull also now have Abdulkadir Omur, the so-called ‘Turkish Messi’ who was once the subject of a £23 million bid from Manchester City.
“I certainly feel Hull are the transfer window winners in the Championship,” Jobi McAnuff, a lower league veteran formerly of Watford and West Ham, tells Sky Sports. “It’s a real sign of intent when you look at the quality they’ve brought in.
“(Zaroury) was magnificent in a really outstanding team in Burnley. When you add that to Carvalho…
“For me, now, looking at who has done the business that is really going to push them into the top six, I’d say Hull are going to be that team.”
One problem Rosenior may have to solve, however, surrounds the fact that Zaroury, Giles and Carvalho are all at their most effective on the left, with the latter tending to drift out to the flank from his favoured number ten role.
If the Hull boss can find a way to fit all these pieces together, though, then bet against an amber-and-black return to the big time at your own risk.
‘Outstanding signing’
“When Fulham went up, I thought (Carvalho) was outstanding,” adds another EFL stalwart Clinton Morrison. “He’s got that little bit of ‘X Factor’, whether he plays out wide or in that number ten role.
“He’s an outstanding signing and I think he’ll be really good. Hull have a great chance this season to get in the top six.”
Carvalho, who spent the first half of the season at RB Leipzig, has already opened his Hull account. The Tigers loanee went some way to earning his stripes with a winner away to Sunderland recently.
