Fabio Carvalho is already making an impression at RB Leipzig with coach Marc Rose hailing the former Liverpool youngster’s ‘top performance’ on the first day of pre-season training.

During his official unveiling at the Bundesliga giants last month, Fabio Carvalho described RB Leipzig as the ‘perfect club for me to continue my development at’.

And this was not merely a new signing on the charm offensive. Carvalho, after barely kicking a ball in anger during the second half of last season at Liverpool, now finds himself at a side who helped transform Christopher Nkunku, Dayot Upamecano and Timo Werner into some of the most coveted young talent in Europe, while setting Naby Keita, Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai on their way to Anfield.

If Carvalho is to have a future at Liverpool – it’s telling that there is no purchase clause in his Leipzig contract – then the former Fulham whizzkid could do a lot worse than to pick up the baton from Szoboszlai, a place at the heart of Leipzig’s midfield now up for grabs.

Leipzig began their pre-season preparations on Monday. And Rose, the former Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Salzburg coach, likes what he sees who joined Liverpool for a fee of £5 million when still a teenager.

“(The new signings) make a good impression,” Rose tells Kicker. “Fabio produced a top performance.”

Despite a bright start to life at Anfield – including a 98th minute winner against Newcastle United – Portugal U21 international Carvalho played only 11 minutes of Premier League football between November and June.

No wonder, when discussing his move to Leipzig, Carvalho mentioned the prospect of regular first-team action as a key factor in his Liverpool departure.

“I’m joining a strong side, one that has been very successful in recent years. Now, I want to help build on this and am looking forward to taking on a new challenge,” Carvalho told the Leipzig website.

“My goal is to play as much as possible. In the league, the cup and especially in the UEFA Champions League.

“RB Leipzig have a reputation for giving young players these kinds of opportunities, which is why this is the perfect club for me to continue my development at.”
