Even though Chelsea reached the League Cup final by beating Middlesbrough 6-1 in the second leg, it wasn’t the best of nights for Mykhailo Mudryk.
The 23-year-old was handed a start by Mauricio Pochettino against the Championship side, but he was told to go for an early shower at half-time.
It seems as though it was 45 minutes to forget for the Chelsea winger, with both his manager and midfielder Enzo Fernandez unimpressed by what he produced.
Nedum Onuoha was pitchside for the game and noticed Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Fernandez giving him ‘a lot of grief’ during the game, as he told ESPN.
The former defender shared how Mykhailo Mudryk was proving to be an unreliable player by making ‘stupid decisions’ and then, as a result, his manager ‘losing faith in him’.
Like many players in the Stamford Bridge dressing room, Chelsea paid big bucks for the player last January, and so far, it hasn’t worked out.
With Aston Villa up next for the Blues in the FA Cup Fourth Round, you will be surprised to see Mykhailo Mudryk in the starting XI.
Mykhailo Mudryk substituted at half-time
“Mudryk today was getting a lot of grief from his manager,” said Onuoha.
“And a lot of grief from Enzo Fernandez on the field. He kept barking instructions at him because every time someone was moving one way. He was supposed to be going the other and he was doing the exact opposite.
“There were so many little transitions where he would get the ball and turn it over with like a little stupid decision. You could see the manager was losing more and more faith in him.
“He doesn’t seem too viable for the next game if the way that they were reacting to him today is how they think about him for the whole season.”

12 months later…
There was a lot of noise around Mudryk when he first joined, mainly because Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal were so keen on him, but also because of the price tag.
In some cases, players are going to take time to develop and they just need patience.
But when so much money has been thrown at your transfer fee, there is another level of expectation that they simply can’t meet and that’s the case with Mudryk now.
If he was a £30 million signing, then he probably would have gotten more positive coverage about him during this past year, but that isn’t proving to be the case and he has to deal with it.
