Chelsea are reportedly battling Manchester United in the race to sign Celtic defender Josip Juranovic, but the Blues could win the battle for the Croatian – if they include Ross Barkley in a player-plus-cash deal this summer.
Juranovic, 27, has earned interest from both Premier League big-hitters after a wonderful first season north of the border. A 20-time Croatia international, he had a hand in seven goals in 35 appearances during 2021-22.
He was a crucial part of a Celtic side that did the double, winning the Scottish Premiership and League Cup. However, he now has chances to leave – with both Chelsea and Manchester United among his admirers before the deadline.
It is believed a fee of £15million could twist the arm of Celtic, who only paid Dinamo Zagreb £2.5million last summer. But Chelsea may have a trump card in their bid to beat United to his signature, thanks to playmaker Barkley.
Chelsea could win Juranovic battle if they include Barkley
Indeed, Celtic are also looking for additions before the end of the month. Chelsea outcast Barkley is said to be a player they are considering. The England international needs a new start, and is in the final year of his current deal.
Reports claim the Scottish champions are one of the clubs looking to sign Barkley – as are West Ham. Chelsea will be desperate to offload Barkley, and bring in a fee. Or, use him in a deal to land one of their own transfer targets.
That is because, he is available on a free next summer. So, Chelsea would surely boost their chances of landing Juranovic by including Barkley in a deal. It is unlikely the Blues will get as much as £15million for the midfielder.
So, it might be that Chelsea have to include Barkley alongside some cash for Juranovic. It would also tempt Celtic more so than a straight-cash offer from United, as it would give them a target of their own.
