Celtic wanted Thomas Henry last summer – and the Venezia striker could now make a big £7.6million move to England with Middlesbrough.

Celtic’s search for new strikers took them to a number of potential signings last summer.

In the end, Ange Postecoglou pounced to sign Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis to bolster his attack.

Daizen Maeda then followed in January, meaning Celtic have completely re-tooled their strike force under Postecoglou.

Some of the rumoured targets who didn’t arrive made moves of their own, such as Henry heading to Venezia.

Celtic were keen on raiding OH Leuven last summer with Henry on their wish list.

The Scottish Sun reported that Celtic were on the verge of a £7million deal to sign Henry.

That didn’t happen though with Venezia swooped in to sign Henry – though Venezia director Paolo Poggi did claim that Celtic wanted Henry.

It was clear that Postecoglou wanted a physical centre forward and when Henry didn’t arrive, Celtic went for Giakoumakis.

Henry was a goal machine for OH Leuven, smashing 45 goals in 78 games before heading to Venezia.

The 27-year-old had a decent season in Serie A, scoring nine times in 34 appearances whilst adding three assists.

That wasn’t enough to keep Venezia in Serie A though and it looks like Henry could move on rather than play in Italy’s second tier.

Sky Sports claim that Middlesbrough have made a huge bid worth €9million (£7.6million) for Henry as they aim for promotion to the Premier League.

Chris Wilder is being backed with major signings and it looks like a massive deal for Henry is now in the pipeline.

Hellas Verona are also interested but it’s Middlesbrough who now look to be leading the race for Henry.

It’s unlikely that Celtic will be getting involved, but it looks like Henry will get his move to the United Kingdom after all – and Venezia will be able to bring in a small profit a year since beating Celtic to his signature.
