Venezia director Paolo Poggi is thrilled Thomas Henry chose his Serie A newcomers despite interest from Scottish giants Celtic, speaking to Tuttomercatoweb

The situation may not be as clear cut as that, however.

Henry never really had a decision to make in the end, given Celtic would have only sealed a deal for the £5 million Frenchman if they had found a buyer for Odsonne Edouard first.

And with interest drying in the former Paris Saint-Germain starlet, reports linking Henry with a big-money move to Celtic Park soon disappeared.

It’s understood Celtic are now going all-out for Giorgos Giakoumakis instead. The 2021 Eredivisie Golden Boot winner could be available for about half the fee OH Leuven wanted for Henry.

But while Celtic never came close to landing the Jupiler League hotshot, that doesn’t mean an ambitious Venezia outfit can’t give themselves an almighty pat on the back.

Can Celtic target Thomas Henry keep Venezia in Serie A?

“To bring Thomas to Venice, we made an important offer,” Poggi says of a man who provided 21 goals and seven assists in his last season in Belgian football.

“Beyond the economic aspect, we have shown confidence in the player by explaining our project to him and we’re satisfied he chose us over many clubs, for example Celtic.”

The 6ft 4in Henry will now be under pressure to justify his sizeable transfer fee and keep Venezia away from the drop zone during their first Serie A season in almost two decades.

“Many teams were looking to sign me this summer but it was easy to make this decision,” Henry explains.

“I decided calmly because I understood the club and the coach (AC Milan legend Pippo Inzaghi) believed in me and I believe this is the best choice.

“To play in such an exciting and important league, it’s important for my career. Playing against teams like Inter and Juventus is very exciting.”
